It is 1984 and Gerd Wiesler receives a new assignment from his bosses. Commonly described by a code, Wiesler accepts the new task of spying and as well reporting any information about playwright George Dreyman. Wiesler is unclear about the new task, but all he knows is that Dreyman is a public figure highly recognised due to his political ideologies. Together with his team, Wiesler installs surveillance cameras in Greyman’s apartment and follow him from head to toe. Behind Wiesler’s assignment, there is a an actual plan that he never knew about.
Hempf then meets Maria, and forces her to have sex with him on the facts that she depends on the state for a job and she also uses drugs. The two start a love affaire and when Dreyman gets to know about it, he sends Maria away and ends their relationship.
Wiesler follows Maria arguing her to be realistic in a move to protect their her relationship with the former lover. Once this landed Hempf’s ears, Wiesler falls into a dangerous path that might end his life soon.
