He is a humble man and a faithful servant in the Roman Army. Maximus (Russell Crowe) is a highly recognized man since he has always executed his duties in the best way possible. He is now a powerful general in the Roman army and loved by all people. Murcus Aurelius, the aging Roman Emperor feels that he is about to die and chooses Maximus as his heir over his biological son, Commodus.
This can’t go down well with Commodus and a power struggle emerges. Badly grieving, Maximus is captured and is made to participate in the gladiator games until he is killed. He sees no need to fight, but there is only one thing that encourages him to go on.
He only wishes to rise on top of the man who will feel his pain and revenge for all the misfortunes he has been through. The fight between Maximus and Commodus begins, but Commodus gets a way of gaining victory since Maximus is already badly wounded.
Even so, Maximus defeats Commodus before he finally dies. Before he breathes his last, he asks for political reforms to flee those who were involved in the Gladiator games and so on
